The wrestling world is reeling from the unexpected passing of Terry “Sabu” Brunk, who died at the age of 60 this past weekend. Known as a hardcore icon and one of ECW’s most influential figures, Sabu left behind a legacy filled with unforgettable moments and matches.
One of his most notable rivals, current AEW commentator Taz, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a heartfelt tribute to the man he credits with launching his own wrestling career.
Taz revealed that the night before learning of Sabu’s passing, he had been watching old videos of him on YouTube, laughing at the interviews because he knew Sabu’s unique sense of humor so well. He then emphasized just how pivotal Sabu was to his success.

“I would not have had the career that I have had, that I’ve been blessed to have if it wasn’t for Sabu. Like that man got me over, and he didn’t have to get me over, and he did.”
The AEW broadcaster went on to recount their ECW debuts in 1993, where both men faced each other. While Sabu was brought in by Paul Heyman as a top star for the promotion, Taz was initially booked for just a single match.
However, it was that very match—thanks to Sabu’s generosity and willingness to elevate his opponent—that earned Taz the support of the ECW fans. Taz concluded his tribute by stating that without Sabu, his own career might never have taken off.
“What Sabu has accomplished in his career has been amazing, this guy is amazing, and he’s just a great-hearted soul. I’m going to miss him immensely, I feel horrible about this, rest in peace my brother Sabu. Please, rest in peace.”
